We are excited to show you our second home. Cape Town is a beautiful city where nature and city life are one. You can easily do a hike, shop, take a dip in the ocean and enjoy wine tasting - all in one day! Of course this is also the place where Clara grew up, and if asked nicely she can show you her school, university and childhood neighbourhood. For us, Cape Town is all about activities in nature, great coffee, delicious food & wine and the warm hospitality of South Africans. "The good life"! Below we share some tips to make the most of your trip.
Atlantic Outlook kayaking - Go out onto the ocean with a kayak. Good chance to spot dolphins, sunfish, penguins and seal while having a beautiful view on the city & mountain.
Surfing at Muizenberg - A great beach for beginner and intermediate surfers. You can rent a board and wetsuit at Lifestyle surf shop or Surf Emporium. The shark flag on the beach indicates if it's safe to go in (which is most of the time).
Kirstenbosch - A beautiful botanical garden on the hills of table mountain. Enjoy a relaxing walk and bring a blanket to have a snack and drink on the fields.
Hike Table Mountain - Not just one flat mountain front as seen on many pictures of Cape Town. Table mountain is actually a whole mountain range and you can enter hikes from multiple sides of the mountain. Some hikes we recommend are Lion's head, Constantia Nek, Kasteelspoort, Elephant's eye and Newlands forest.
Oranjezicht City Farm Market - A food market on Saturday mornings where you can hang out and enjoy snacks and drinks.
Run along Seafront promenade - On the Atlantic Seaboard side of the city you can stroll along the promenade or go for a run. You can go all the way to Camps Bay and Beta Beach if you want!
Beaches - There are multiple beaches in and around Cape Town. On the Atlantic side, the water is very cold. On the Indian Ocean side, the water is slightly warmer. Beaches we recommend are Clifton, Camps Bay, Llundadno, Scarborough and Muizenberg beach.
Bootleggers - Coffee chain with great coffee & breakfast.
Woolworths Cafe - Casual but good quality spot, near Woolworths supermarkets. The supermarket itself also has good salads, wraps and snacks if you want to take something on the road.
Tashas Waterfront - Popular local hotspot for lunch in-between shopping. Observe Cape Town's yummy mummies in their natural habitat!
Chardonnay Deli - Cute little cottage with delicious food & a shop.
Starlings Locale - Justin's fav for eggs Florentine / Benedict
Hazz - Coffee in a breezy, cool vibe.
Nourish'd Café & Juicery - Healthy bowls, wraps and juices. Close to the Table Mountain cable car.
Scheckter's RAW Sea Point - Clara's favourite vegan hangout! Try the Pumpkin Pie Flapjacks.
The Gardener’s Cottage - Sit under the big old oak trees on a beautiful terrace.
Kleinsky's Delicatessen - Best bagels in town.
JARRYDS Brunch & Bistro - Hip breakfast spot with many options in Seapoint.
Arthur's Mini Super - Coffee, drinks, sandwiches and a good vibe.
Tambours winkel - Close to Lion's Head and the Table Mountain cable car. Treat yourself to a coffee after Lion's head hike.
Wildsprout Kenilworth - In case you're in the neighbourhood, a great spot for a healthy lunch.
Giovanni's - A true Cape Town institution. This old Italian deli is great for a coffee at the bar or take-aways.
Willoughby & Co (Waterfront) - World famous sushi at the mall.
Kloof Street House - Great vibe for a dinner night out on the town.
Thali - The most delicious Indian food and cocktails ever.
Il Leone - Best place for authentic Italian pasta and a glass of wine. A Cape Town favourite, you can't go wrong.
Ariel Modern Italian - Another place for a vibey night out in town.
Mano’s - Authentic Mediterranean dishes.
South China Dim Sum Bar - Dexter's guilty pleasure.
Ouzeri - Modern, elevated Greek cuisine.
Posticino (take out pizza) - A classic for a casual take-away (or eat in) pizza.
Chefs warehouse at Tinswalo - Fine dining with one of the best views. A little van takes you from the parking all the way down to the shore, where you enjoy the sunset and a night to remember!
La Colombe - Food is their theater. Experience the most amazing dishes and wine, paired with amazingly creative presentation.
La Petite Colombe (Franschhoek) - The second location of La Colombe, but in the beautiful scenery of Franschoek. A small drive out of town, but definitely worth it. Also great for an extraordinary lunch.
Constantia Glen - Justin's favourite in Cape Town. Delicious wine, snacks and a great view.
Groot Constantia - Take a walk around the vineyards and do some wine tasting!
La Parada - Cold pints at the foot of Constantia Nek (hike).
Buitenverwachting - Sit on the lawns picnic-style and share a bottle of wine.
Winchester Mansion - Try get a spot in the Bougainville-filled Courtyard.
Aperitif - Sip a cocktail in the sun on famous Bree street.
Visit the wine regions Stellenbosch & Franschhoek - South Africa is a famous wine country and hosts hudreds of wineries. Most of them are spread across Stellenbosch, Franschhoek and Paarl. A good way to see (and taste) many in one go is to hop on the Wine Tram. It takes you past many great wine farms and you can hop on and off whenever you want. Each wine farm offers wine tasting at a small price. Since there will likely be some / a lot of drinking involved, we recommend staying a night or arranging a transfer (Uber doesn't go between the wine region and Cape Town). There are so many options to visit, so let us highlight a few of our favourites.
Boschendal
Babylonstoren
Grande Provence
La Motte
Leopard’s Leap
Rupert & Rothschild
Tokara
Jordan Wine Estate
Kalk Bay - An old fishing village which has retained it's charm! A great place to stay or spend an afternoon and evening. Chartfield guesthouse is a great place to stay. For food we recommend Salt, Olympia cafe, Ohana cafe, Chardonnay Deli Kalk Bay and Sirocco. What is also very popular amongst the locals is to take a morning dip in the Dalebrook tidal pool - combine it with a coffee & croissant from Chardonnay Deli.
Boulders Beach - Where lots of penguins gather :)
Cape of Good Hope - This cape is located at the most southern tip of the peninsula. Read up on the historic significance of this spot. Can be done as daytrip from Cape Town, potentially combine it with Boulders beach.
Cederberg - At about 2-3 hours drive from Cape Town, you can spend some time in this rocky scenery. You can go hiking (Check out Wolfberg Arch and Wolfberg Cracks), do stargazing at night, see rock art and visit a Rooibos farm. This is the only place on earth where Rooibos grows. If you want to treat yourself, stay at Simbavati Cederberg Ridge Wilderness Lodge.
Stanford Valley Country Lodge - This can be one of the places to stay when driving east, 30 minutes from Hermanus. You stay in a little cottage where you can relax, go mountain biking and eat great food at their Manor House restaurant.
Hermanus - A small seaside town with a laid-back feel and cozy center with cute little shops. In certain seasons you can spot whales from the shore or from a boat.
Plettenberg bay - This town is a favourite of Clara's family! We highly recommend you spend some time here when driving up the East Coast (~6 hours from Cape Town). For breakfast we recommend Le Fournil, for lunch and wine-tasting Newstead Wine and for dinner Emily Moon. We are sure you will love Plett!
Safari near Johannesburg - It is possible to do a safari near Cape Town, but if you want to experience a true African Safari, hop on a flight to Johannesburg and go to one of the parks there. Kruger National Park is very popular, but Madikwe and Pilansberg are amazing and closer to Johannesburg. Book a couple of nights at a lodge and their talented guides will take you on game drives at each sunrise and sunset. Prepare to see lots of rhinos, rlephants, giraffes, lions and hopefully some cheetahs too!
