Where to stay in Cape Town

Picture of Where to stay in Cape Town

The city of Cape Town surrounds the majestic Table Mountain range. The city has two main areas: the Atlantic Seaboard and the Southern Suburbs. The Atlantic Seaboard is bustling and vibrant, and more touristy. It may be easier to find an airbnb or hotel here. The Southern Suburbs are green and lush, home to several of our favourite wine farms and feature a few historic landmarks. This is also where Clara grew up. Both areas are lovely!

Neighbourhoods to stay

Atlantic Seaboard: Seapoint, Greenpoint, Camps Bay, Clifton, Oranjezicht, Gardens.

Southern Suburbs: Constantia, Newlands, Bishops Court, Claremont, Rondebosch.

Getting around

The best way to get around is by car. You can walk around in busy areas on the Atlantic Seaboard but for the rest it's easier to make your way by car. We recommend renting a car at the airport, which gives you great freedom to do whatever, whenever. When you go out and plan to have drinks, it's better to get an Uber instead. If you require a longer transfer, to the airport or to the wine region for example, let us know and we can recommend a transfer company.

General tips

Safety - Generally Cape Town is safe. However, stay aware of your surroundings. For example, make sure you don't walk on the streets or hiking trails when it's dark. Also, ensure your car is always locked and make sure you don't leave things in your parked car. Be careful of flashing things like phones & watches on the streets.

eSim - If your phone supports eSim, download the Flexiroam or Airalo app and easily buy mobile data for your stay.

Parking & Car guards - there is usually plenty of parking in Cape Town. If you don't park in a parking garage, a car guard will usually approach you upon parking asking you to pay (usually by card). There are also many unofficial car guards in places where parking is "free". These citizens help you park and look after your car. Although you don't have to pay them, it's nice to give a small tip if you have cash.

Currency & Payments - The local currency is the South African Rand. At most places you can just pay by card, but also good to have some cash on hand.

Things to bring - Sunscreen, swimwear, sunglasses, shoes for hiking, something warm for the evening. And wedding attire!
